Croatia dominate the 470 Junior Worlds

470 Junior World Championship - Croatia dominate the 470 Junior Worlds
NEUSIEDLERSEE, AUSTRIA-(3-9-2003) The best young 470 sailors are currently contesting their Junior World Championship from the Burgenländische Yacht-Club, Neusiedler See, Austria. With 9 races completed it is Sime FANTELA and Igor MARENIC Igor (CRO) who hold the top slot.

Not far behind the leading pair are team mates Ante CESIC and Ante KUJUNDZIC, with an 8 point deficit.

The criteria for participation at the Youth Worlds is that each crew member shall not have attained his or her 22nd birthday before or on 31.12.2003. (i.e. born in 1982 or later), and the age ranges certainly vary across the fleet. However, for some of the older sailors, they are no strangers to elite competition and will be moving straight from Austria down to Cadiz for the 2003 ISAF World Championship and possible Olympic qualification for their country.

Of the current top 10 crews, all but the Greek pairing of Dionisis DIMOU and Athanasios SIOUZIOS will be moving onto Cadiz, demonstrating that these youngsters are able to mix it at the top whatever their age.

The Championship consisted of a qualification series, which has been completed, with the crew then split into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets. With racing due to conclude on Saturday 6 September, we will see who will be entering Cadiz with a World Championship to their name.
